SOFTBALL MAKES HISTORY AGAIN!
The Everett Alvarez Softball Program makes history once more. The Eagles have not only beaten the odds of earning a spot into the postseason this year but they were able to take it all the way to the top and win every game since the conclusion of the regular season of play.
The Eagles found themselves in familiar territory from last year being in the 6th place position in the very difficult PCAL=Gabilan Division. This meant that the ladies had to compete in a play-in game against Carmel to earn an automatic berth into the CCS Tournament. In winning that play-in game, the Eagles were ranked into Division III as the #4 team.
In the CCS quarterfinals, Eagles hosted and took on Notre Dame of Belmont where they took it down to the last couple of innings to win it 2-1. The CCS semifinals brought in San Mateo for a game that set the stage for the finals; the Eagles ending the game via mercy rule 10-0 in 6 innings. For the CCS Championship game, the Eagles found themselves playing the same team they played the previous year in the CCS Championship game, Santa Teresa. The Eagles again took this one to the edge of everyone's seats and captured the program's 3rd CCS title in a row; a rare 3-peat championship!!
As the champions, the Eagles moved onto the CIF NorCal Regional State Championship Tournament. With their rankings from CIF, they were placed as the #1 team in Division IV. They were awarded a bye for the quarterfinals and awaited the semifinals game. As the highest seeded school, that guaranteed that they would host any and all games that they'd play for the tournament. The semifinals brought on Las Plumas from Oroville. The Eagles again kept it a tight game and earned another victory beating the Thunderbirds 1-0 on no other day than GRADUATION DAY! Yes, they played the morning of graduation so that the graduating seniors can play and then graduate without missing any festivities. This set the stage for the ladies to host the CIF NorCal Division IV State Championship Game where they took on East Nicolaus (north of Sacramento and south of Yuba City). They Eagles got on the board early and worked their magic to complete their season and end it on their terms with a 1-0 victory earning them their program's first-ever CIF state title!
Not only did the softball program earn themselves a first-ever state title, but they earned Everett Alvarez High School their first-ever state title. This was almost done just a few months ago when the girls soccer team competed in the CIF NorCal State title game and lost but brought home the 2nd place trophy. The icing on the cake of it all is that the Eagles were also the first-ever school within the city of Salinas to win a CIF state title in softball in city history!
A congratulations to our softball program for making history once again and best representing the Eagle Nation!
